Invizin Residency! From here to There

Is ‘here’ different from ‘there’? Is here an actual place, an imagined or remembered place? Is here a place that only exists when you’re in it? And if you leave here, where would you go?

My Name Is Scot and Leannej Have been invited to lead a three week intensive series of workshops, lectures and art making sessions @ Invizin Residency in Tornareccio Italy. The theme of the residency is exploring the ideas and feelings that are associated with the places we come from and the places we move to.

We are excited to be working with local and migrant youth from the area, helping them to explore a variety of hands on approaches to collecting images, creating media, and telling stories. The workshops will encourage participants to experiment with a variety of techniques, media, and devices ranging from cell phone technology to oral history. We will be working individually and in groups to explore the symbols, structures and concepts that define our ideas of time and place.

We will be also be collaborating with local artists, musicians, designers, and community organizers to ensure a diversity of perspectives and promote new and lasting connections. Some of the proposed outcomes of the residency process will be the publication of a small ‘zine’ and the creation of a short collective video piece that can potentially be screened in cultural facilities, community centres, on the web and in other public spaces and a public presentation at Invizin Residency where the participants can share their work with family and friends.

Pre-flight Nerves

On Friday, I found myself standing in a grocery store, I was holding a mango. I had no idea why I was holding a mango. I didn’t even know why I was in the store. To make matters worse, I confided all this to the mango. When it occurred to me that 1. I was inexplicably holding a mango and 2. talking to it. I put the mango back and slunk out of the store.

If a Flower Dies….

The Activist says,

“I heard about a boy. The boy picked a flower and gave it to his mother. At first, he was happy, because by giving her this gift  he had made her happy. But later, when he saw the flower wilting in a glass of water, he began to wonder, ‘If the flower dies, will I die?'”
